Erm, What Am I?

starvingOk, ok, violins out – my chosen career path is, well, dead. Withered. Mothballed and shoved to the back of a cupboard in the spare bedroom next to the Nordic walking poles.

Apart from the fact that there’s a distinct lack of translation jobs in Cardiff, not many companies are inclined to convert their English brochures into Norwegian. And why would they?

And that’s fine. Honest. Gulp. Takk, and all that.

So now, who exactly am I in the grand scheme of things?

Well, pull your Ikea chair closer, for I have The Answer.

I. Am. A. Writer.

I know, strange, huh? We had a new peep on board this week at our latest project. He took in my overalls, my notepad, my, ahem, probing questions about the job. And then he asked me what I did in my real life. Hmm. I stumbled. I stuttered, ‘well, I, like, you know, erm, blog?

‘You’re a writer then.’

‘Erm, ah, no, not really, I, you know, blog, kind of…..’

‘You’re a writer then?’

Oh.

*Pauses for a very, very long time to let this information digest, totally forgetting that I am enrolled on an MA in Creative Writing*

‘Erm, Yeah, s’pose. Never thought of it like, you know, ‘Writer’.

Eek. A writer?

A seductive thought. The clouds, they are very dark and they are bright. And dark! And light again.

Congratulations – isn’t it wonderful when the penny finally drops and an identity you may have only fantasized about is confirmed by someone else? All well and good but even better, I’ve been reliably informed when we actually allow ourselves to believe it and genuinely inhabit it. I personally haven’t quite got there yet, though on good days I’m almost there. You’re doing something about it and taking yourself seriously – your MA is proof of that and your blog is wonderful evidence of your craft. I hope you enjoy it and continue to share it with us.

      Thank you so much!
It sure is wonderful. Don’t know why I really thought about it in that way before.
I’m enjoying the MA a whole lot more than I thought I would to start with. And as for blogging, I adore it!

  2. I would consider blogging a form of writing, but not every blog owner could or should consider themselves a writer :p Some have horrible grammar, (mine included :p). Yours is well written and flows nicely when read, your passion for writing clearly comes threw with your text.

      Thank you for the compliment!
You make a very good point. Up until this week, I had never referred to myself as a writer, more a blogger. Ho hum…
